Summary: | Paul Ricoeur's so-called ‘philosophical embargo on God’ nonetheless belies theological themes pervasive throughout his corpus. Rather than expose him as a ‘theologian in disguise’, this article poses the question of how taking his agnosticism seriously can engender a productive imagination for religious thought. Ricoeur's agnosticism is theologically suggestive in that his undecidability is arguably a religious moment that gives way to the inexplicably given. His agnosticism becomes an intercessory prayer for a theology of otherness and eschatological hope. Thus his agnosticism is less a detour than a course for theological reflection and postreligious faith. |
