Raymond himself quite rightly objects to the current tendency to read religious literature ‘allegorically’, that is, as thinly disguised propaganda for one’s political party or position. He similarly objects to critical readings that narrowly interpret spiritual or elegiac lyrics as chiefly promoting anti-popery, colonial ambitions or even national identity in anything like the modern sense of the word. | ||
