Summary: | To discern the relation of ‘Christ and culture’ is an increasingly awkward task. Today traits of traditional Christianity are being explored, expropriated, and rediscovered in fashionable culture theories, artistic creativity, and even commercial marketing. To explore the intertwining of historical Christian faith and postmodern global culture is thus of increasing importance and at this juncture a close look at the crossroads of faith and art can prove to be salient. A new monograph on the music of J. S. Bach may not be obviously related to such concerns but the Glasgow musicologist John Butt has produced an unusual book that radically widens the scope of Bach scholarship. |
