Departing from studies assessing Villagrá's lack of literary merit, which have closed further discussion on the intention of his poem, Padilla vindicates Villagrá's poetic appropriation of the epic genre and indebtedness to Homer's Odyssey, Livy's Annals and, above all, Virgil's Aeneid in order to identify how ‘historical consciousness colludes with epic invention [and] figurative language masks political chagrin’ (p. 7). | ||
