Sumario:These quite brief notes to the Four Quartets are based on the annotations made in Dutch by the eminent Belgian literary critic Herman Servotte for his Dutch edition of the poems in 1974. They are prepared to accompany a new paperback edition of the Quartets, and paginated accordingly. Ethel Grene has translated, edited and enlarged Servotte’s original work, augmenting from the work of others, in particular from Helen Gardner’s 1978 book The Composition of Four Quartets. Although these notes can claim little by way of originality, they have the considerable virtue of distilling the wisdom of a wealth of earlier scholarship and offering to the reader of the poems a sure and theologically sensitive guide through the dense complexities and the beauties of Eliot’s poetry.
