Summary: | The Monstrosity of Christ: Paradox or Dialectic? is an addition to the ‘Short Circuits’, a series which uses psychoanalytic theory to shed new light on philosophical, theological and ideological positions. The book reconsiders the opposing positions of atheism and Christian faith, staging the confrontation between two antithetical propositions through a debate between Slavoj Žižek, the renowned Marxist atheist, and John Milbank, the Christian theologian at the centre of the Radical Orthodoxy movement. What separates the two celebrated figures is immediately clear: on the one hand we have Žižek’s materialism; on the other, Milbank’s all-encompassing theology. Yet, focussing on such differences risks too strong a dichotomy between atheism and religion. |
