520 |a Rowan Williams's impressive study of Dostoevsky's narrative art is the fruit of more than half a lifetime's immersion in Russian orthodox culture and thought. It should be stressed from the outset that the book neither constitutes an introduction to Dostoevsky's poetics nor is it truly directed to a lay readership. The work assumes a thorough knowledge of Dostoevsky's novels, shorter fiction, notebooks and journalism; it frequently alludes to major studies in the canon of Dostoevsky scholarship and to their influence; it draws liberally upon Russian history and the philosophy of religion; and it presupposes a familiarity with Mikhail Bakhtin's profound critical contribution in his ‘polyphonic’ and ‘dialogic’ readings of this great Russian novelist.
