Summary: | ‘You will be able to contemplate God when you have learnt to listen to the word and look long at it; in other words to read,’ we read in Jabès’ El ou le dernier livre. Nathalie Debrauwere-Miller's intense, ambitious and thought-provoking study of Jabès and his work is just such a lesson in reading. The very title becomes more and more vibrant, paradoxical and impelling as we progress: the French « envisager » suggests contemplation, reflection and choice. But it is also a direct subversion of the second commandment forbidding graven image, and of the law dictating that he who looks on the face of God must die. Facing God implies facing up to him, giving him a face and challenging him. |
