Summary: | This well-written and helpful introduction to religion and literature in what is a very ‘long’ nineteenth century (1750–1914) succeeds in its aims, defined in the blurb on the back cover as offering ‘a detailed grounding in the main religious movements of the period’, considering ‘the question of secularization … in the light of the diversity and capacity for renewal within the Christian faith’ and connecting this faith with ‘a broader literary culture’. It is well-structured, combining the chronological with the thematic, beginning with two chapters rooted in the eighteenth-century on Dissent and Unitarianism, continuing with explorations of the Evangelical and Oxford Movements, and ending with accounts of Secularization and Catholicism. |
