A problem means limits and contradiction, perhaps self-contradiction (Protestant Theology in the Nineteenth Century, Karl Barth. London: SCM Press, 2001, 23)., Leaving aside Barth's own grand dogmatic vision, one cannot but recognise that his is an important and cogent assessment of the condition of the one he describes as ‘absolute man’—the man of the Enlightenment. For this is a person who finds himself mysteriously at odds with his environment and himself.
