In keeping with the approach of many works in the field, the book's opening pages provide a two-fold rationale for what is to follow. First, the interests and skills of students (including seminarians) are changing: many have a limited knowledge of biblical texts and theological concepts, but are knowing consumers of popular (specifically, screen) culture. Accordingly, ‘the asking of theological questions which results from film-watching can immediately become a more existential matter than might be possible from reading classic works of theology as “ dry texts” ’ (p. 4). Second, Marsh suggests, cinema-going is religion-like.
