520 | |a Theology goesto the Movies is the latest offering from Clive Marsh, who has done much to establish the place of film on the contemporary British theological agenda. In keeping with the approach of many works in the field, the book's opening pages provide a two-fold rationale for what is to follow. First, the interests and skills of students (including seminarians) are changing: many have a limited knowledge of biblical texts and theological concepts, but are knowing consumers of popular (specifically, screen) culture. Accordingly, ‘the asking of theological questions which results from film-watching can immediately become a more existential matter than might be possible from reading classic works of theology as “ dry texts” ’ (p. 4). Second, Marsh suggests, cinema-going is religion-like. | ||
