Summary: | From the time of Pope Gregory the Great to the Reformation, the identities of the Mary Magdalene who witnessed Christ's resurrection and was delivered from seven demons, the sinful woman who anointed Jesus’ feet with her tears, and Mary the sister of Martha and Lazarus were all conflated into the single figure of Mary Magdalene. This unica Magdalena, whose cult thrived in the Middle Ages, has an extra-biblical life that includes an apostolic missionary journey and finally a retreat to an ascetic life in the desert marked by visionary experiences. |
