The spiritual experience that Augustine and Dionysius convey to us is admirably evoked by Claudel in his poetic art. By meditating on Claudel's beautiful images, we can arrive at the experience of the Imageless One or God. Claudel's self-transformation takes place when he withdraws his ‘senses from the outside objects’; then he discovers, as does Augustine and Dionysius, his essential and original being, which is participation in, or communion with, God.
