Mind the Gap: The Impact of Wolfgang Iser's Reader–Response Criticism on Biblical Studies—A Critical Assessment

A reading of Iser's theoretical works renders a different impression of his reader–response criticism to that gained by a reading of summaries and applications of it. This is so partly because it is hard to put Iser's theory into practice, and partly because of a great deal of misunderstan...

This is so partly because it is hard to put Iser's theory into practice, and partly because of a great deal of misunderstanding among biblical scholars concerning Iser's theory. Iser's later thought moved in a direction which is not (and probably will not be) as appealing to biblical scholars as his earlier thought. We especially criticise his approach for not investigating the question of how the text and its reader(s) form a community.
