Both authors had read T S Eliot's The Waste Land and use striking wasteland imagery in their books. Both also refer to God and the reign of God in the world of their characters. By developing these two themes I was able to connect up many of the sub-themes of these books including those of decay, suffering, isolation, moral man and immoral society and the spiritual development of the leading characters in the novels.
