It posits that they are joined by an African aesthetic that is best termed ‘non-mimetic’. This non-mimetic discourse is understood by modern critical theory as a post-modern sensibility which emphasises the creative, spontaneous, abstract and mystical dimensions of human consciousness. The authors use examples from modern jazz (bebop artists) and pentecostalism (glossolalia) to carry the argument that African American culture was particularly sensitive to the transformation from the modern to the post-modern era.
