520 |a Mary Ward's 1888 novel Robert Elsmere and its 1911 sequel, The Case of Richard Meynell, are interesting not only as portraits of religious reformers. Two in a long line of fictional Romances of Property which regard English Christianity as one of those properties, the novels participate in the equivocal arousals, validaitons and deferrals of that “force” which is faith, and which is needed to establish, and defend, “property”. Elsmere resigns his church property as his faith evolves, and “sacralizes” secular peoperties, but Meynell calims his church, forcing the authorities to drive him out.
