Il Confessore insegna che la speranza dipende dalla fede e nel contempo è la sua fortezza. Secondo lui, è proprio della speranza mostrare come presenti i beni futuri, ad esempio la risurrezione del corpo umano, la salvezza eterna e la grazia della divinizzazione. Riguardo al motivo della speranza, afferma che non si deve sperare negli uomini, ma in Dio solo. Ritiene altresì che la speranza è una condizione di possibilità della preghiera incessante. Inoltre, mette in rapporto la speranza con le altre virtù necessarie per il combattimento spirituale. Infine, la speranza di partecipare alla stessa vita divina riempie l’anima di una gioia indescrivibile, e le reca conforto nelle sofferenze.St. Maximus the Confessor never wrote a specific study on the Christian virtue of hope. Nevertheless, his works contain many texts which talk about this significant theological virtue. Thus, St. Maximus teaches that hope depends upon faith and, at the same time, the former is the strength of the latter. He claims that it is proper for hope to show future realities as existing in the present, for instance: the resurrection of the body, eternal salvation and the grace of divinization. Regarding the reason for hope, he affirms that a Christian must place his hope not in man but in God only. The Confessor also believes that hope is indispensable for reaching unceasing prayer. He explains hope in relation to the other virtues necessary for spiritual warfare. Finally, the hope of participating in divine life fills the soul with an indescribable joy, as well as, providing comfort in suffering. | ||
