520 |a Spirituality is typically defined as a form of experience or understanding which has to do with the realm of the transcendent. Indeed, at a popular level at least, 'spiritual' and 'transcendent' are virtually synonymous as descriptive of that which is lofty, idealistic, elevated or pious. It is in the focus upon feelings and experiences of transcendence that we touch base with what appears to be a central theme in recent attempts to understand the spiritual dimension. This article explores the relationship between experiences of transcendence and spiritual experiences and attempts to map out what should be understood by these terms. It is argued, contrary to popular conceptions, that we need to draw a careful distinction between experiences of 'transcendence' and 'spiritual' experience. The implications of this distinction are considered within the context of educational priorities and concerns.
