520 |a With the aid of linguistic analysis, the words of Eucharistic institution (`This is my body/blood') in the New Testament can be shown to unambiguously express identity. Other competing interpretations (e.g. paraphrases with `represent' or `signify') cannot be reasonably justified on any grammatical grounds. These sentences, therefore, constitute firm scriptural evidence for the doctrine of Eucharistic change, although they do not favour any particular theological approach to this doctrine. The argument is grammatical and hinges on the presence of `indexical' expressions in both nominal expressions connected by the copula. This observation leads to the conclusion that, at the grammatical level, the copula here expresses only identity. Concerns about the ambiguity of the copula in these sentences are unfounded.
