Having pointed out the disappearance of theology from modern political language, he delivers an historical-conceptual reconstruction of the notion of «Christian» bent instead on underlining the contextuality of the two categories. He then works out the reasons for which nationalism-understood as the identifying criterion of the Christian community-represents a variation of political Messianism. In his critique of theological-political Eusebianism Peterson finally proves how the adaptation of ecclesiastic space to the political times leads to the negation of the «eschatological dialectic», which he instead sees as the perspective from which to define the public nature of political language and the presence of the church in history.
