Summary:After defining conflict and violence, the author reviews the historic origins of the systemic racial, ethnic, and class violence which characterizes the patterns of relationships within many social and ecclesial institutions of the United States. This article suggests that the transformation of such socially sinful patterns must become a goal of the evangelizing and justice mission of the church within the United States.
