520 | |a The genealogies of Asher (1 Chron. 7.30-40) and Ephraim (7.20-29) are examined in order to isolate the pre-Chronicles sources and to under stand the Chronicler's contribution. It is suggested that the old source(s) included vv. 21aγ-25aα and 31b-39 and covered the territory of the sons of Ephraim in the northern Shephelah and the hill country. Around this core the Chronicler built his genealogies, all the remaining text being composed by him. He identified Heber, the grandson of Asher (Gen. 46.17), with Heber, the founder of the Galilaean tribe. The Chronicler's additions and elaborations are usually devoid of authentic foundation and hence it is of utmost importance to isolate the old sources within his work. | ||
