This paper challenges that interpre tation on the basis of the syntax of the pronouncement, the connection of the pro nouncement with the portents surrounding Jesus' death, and the audience's expecta tion that can be assumed from the literary parallels. As the narrative continues we see continuing confusion in the reaction to Jesus' death and resurrection. The pro nouncement is intentionally ambiguous and is used by Mark to allow his audience to hear a deeper meaning while leaving the veil of secrecy, an essential part of Mark's religious world view, intact. | ||
