Sickness, therefore, takes on a specifi cally symbolic meaning and denotes a person’s relationship with God, which – in some manner – must be restudied. Hebrew medicine, which formed on deeply religious bases and in tight connection with the pact of allegiance between God and his people, become more and more specialized over time: here the love for science and the deeply innate respect for the norms contained in the Pentateuch merged miraculously. From the very beginning of the history of Israel, ethics and medicine are therefore securely linked and the principles contained in the Holy Scriptures are embedded in the therapeutic methods: the fundamental ones regard an absolute respect for human life and the imperative of not hurting oneself and others | ||
