On the one hand, from the beginning of Japanese history Buddhism appears connected with the political power and is decidedly androcentric. On the other hand, it traditionally tolerates the marriage of priests in contrast to the original Buddhist ideal of being «houseless», namely of «leaving the worldly life». The former does not only cause a lot of negative images in regard to women, but also absurd phenomena such as designating holy places that by tradition are barred to women. Because of the latter, women and their sexuality have been regarded as being evil or an enemy on the path to salvation, and the wives of priests were regarded for a long time to be obscure persons, even though they do exist, despite the fact that originally in Buddhist precepts they are not allowed, and they do after all play an indispensable role in the daily affairs of temples. Nowadays feminists are strongly criticizing the sexual discrimination within the bounds of modern Buddhism, which is still essentially based upon the traditional patriarchal family-system
