From an ethical point of view, the problem can be stated as follows in contemporary terms: how to combine the plurality of the sources of ethics with government neutrality? The Canadian catholic philosopher Charles Taylor provides us with the essential keys for understanding the ethical, religious, and political issues of the secular age. It is partic-ularly important to clarify the relationship of beliefs and secular rationality. To avoid the deadlock of an ideological and aggressive secularism we must rethink the dialectic of transcendence and immanence. In this field, the philosophy of religion must come up with a new theory. Philosophy, theology, and ethics are calling for the development of a rational dialectic, capable of dealing with the present-day challenges of the critical and participatory democracy. | ||
