Description
Summary:This short inquiry aims to call attention to the fact that today the word «hospitality» is once an important refence point with regard to the sensitivity of wo-men and men. It refers to a well-established social phenomenon and it represents a universal anthropological principle that human beings have always tried to cultivate and preserve. In all its intricate semantic complexity, hospitality points to a central focus: making possible a bond of equality and reciprocity, as witnessed by various contemporary authors such as G. Steiner, Jacques Derrida, and Emmanuel Levinas. As Paul Ricoeur says, «hospitality» actually implies the attitude to «take care», that is to create the space for an exchange, for the interaction between two different positions such as the one between doctor and patient Care generates compassion and skills not only in those who provide it but also in those who receive it. It is from this subtle exchange that medicine originated and will continue to originate in the future.
