520 |a This article explores beliefs, values and religious practices among young adult Muslims aged 20–32, who were born in or have spent most of their lives in Norway, and who are currently undergoing, or have completed, higher education. More specifically, it investigates the extent to which their accounts mirror a broader trend described as therapeutisation of religion. The analysis of qualitative interviews with fifteen individuals finds several features that are concordant with a therapeutic discourse: attentiveness and authority given to oneʼs subjective inner life; the goal of mental-emotional wellbeing as motivation for practice; the belief in a loving and supportive God rather than a strict judge; and the emphasis on fulfilment in the present life. However, the findings also show limitations to the adoption of a therapeutic outlook, and point to where and how the Islamic tradition represents an intersecting, sometimes conflicting, discourse on self and morality.
