However, in a (post)modern, secular society like the Netherlands, the awareness of the presence of God and its implications for human activities seem to have got lost. Benedictine spirituality is the oldest form-of-life that tries to unify life and liturgical practice in Western Christianity. According to St Benedict, every activity can be liturgical. Sometimes, everyday activities acquire a liturgical quality, or reading becomes a liturgical practice. Next to these more implicit practices, there are explicit liturgical practices such as prayer and worship, which are separated as either personal or communal services. Although the number of monks and nuns in the Netherlands (and other Western countries) is decreasing rapidly, these implicit and explicit liturgical practices are increasingly popular beyond the abbey walls. One interesting group to research in this regard are oblates: lay persons affiliated to an abbey and enacting monastic liturgical practices in the outside world. This article presents qualitative empirical liturgical research on their experiences. The following key question is addressed: How are monastic liturgical practices enacted by Benedictine oblates in the Netherlands, and what is their experience in relationship to secular society? The analysis of open questionnaire research among 53 respondents has been utilised to explore this question. They are oblates of three Benedictine abbeys in the Netherlands. The aim is twofold: first to acquire knowledge with regard to this group that is seldom researched, and second to demonstrate the theological relevance of liturgical experiences with a concrete case-study. | ||

La spiritualité bénédictine est le plus ancien modèle de vie du christianisme occidental qui tente d'unifier la vie quotidienne et la pratique liturgique. Selon saint Benoît, toute activité peut être liturgique. Parfois, les activités quotidiennes acquièrent une qualité liturgique, même la lecture devient une pratique liturgique. À côté de ces pratiques plus implicites, il existe des pratiques liturgiques explicites comme la prière et le culte, qui sont mises à part en tant que services personnels ou communautaires. Bien que le nombre de moines et de moniales aux Pays-Bas (et dans d'autres pays occidentaux) diminue rapidement, ces pratiques liturgiques implicites et explicites sont de plus en plus populaires au-delà des murs des abbayes. Un groupe intéressant à étudier à cet égard sont les oblats: les laïcs affiliés à une abbaye et qui mettent en œuvre des pratiques liturgiques monastiques dans le monde extérieur. Cet article présente une recherche liturgique empirique qualitative sur leurs expériences. La question clé est la suivante: Comment les pratiques liturgiques monastiques sont-elles mises en œuvre par les oblats bénédictins aux Pays-Bas, et comment vivent-ils leur relation avec la société séculière? Une analyse de la recherche par questionnaire ouvert parmi 53 répondants a été utilisée pour explorer cette question. Il s’agit des oblats de trois abbayes bénédictines des Pays-Bas. L'objectif est double: d'une part, acquérir des connaissances sur ce groupe rarement étudié et, d'autre part, démontrer la pertinence théologique des expériences liturgiques à l'aide d'une étude de cas concrète. | ||
