While the manuscript proper contains acts associated with one of Prémontré’s dependent curtes, Tinselve, the scrap piece of parchment used to create the flyleaf contains brief summaries of five letters to be sent from the abbey to other Premonstratensian houses in France and Germany and to a count of Holland. It is therefore a unique survival of the administrative ephemera which the mother abbey of a major medieval monastic order must once have created in abundance. The authors argue that the Tinselve flyleaf, when viewed within the context of other documents of practice produced at Prémontré, complicates traditional narratives of the Premonstratensian Order’s early years. Rather than supporting a story of harmony among the early followers of Norbert of Xanten, the order’s founder, the flyleaf instead helps us to glimpse the institutional workings of Prémontré and its affiliated communities at a moment in the mid-13th century when its abbots were working hard to assert their primacy over other houses and to implement internal reforms. | ||

Alors que le cartulaire en tant que tel contient des copies d’actes relatives à Tinselve, l’une des curtes dépendant de Prémontré, le fragment de parchemin utilisé pour le feuillet de garde a servi à copier de brefs résumés de cinq lettres destinées au comte de Hollande ainsi qu’à d’autres institutions prémontrées en France et en Allemagne. Ce fragment ouvre donc des perspectives assez uniques sur les documents administratifs éphémères que l’abbaye-mère de cet important ordre monastique médiéval a dû produire en abondance. En replaçant ce fragment dans son contexte documentaire, les auteurs du présent article avancent que le feuillet de garde de Tinselve nuance les récits traditionnels sur les premières années de l’ordre. Ce document ne permet plus, en effet, de soutenir l’hypothèse de relations totalement harmonieuses entre les premiers disciples de Norbert de Xanten, le fondateur de l’ordre. À l’inverse, le feuillet de garde permet d’entrevoir le fonctionnement institutionnel de Prémontré et des communautés qui y étaient affiliées au milieu du 13e s., à un moment où les abbés de Prémontré s’efforçent d’asseoir leur primauté sur les autres maisons et d’implémenter des réformes internes. | ||

Während das eigentliche Manuskript Akten beinhaltet, die die von Prémontré abhängige curtes Tinselve betreffen, enthält das Stück Pergament, das für das Deckblatt benutzt, wurde kurze Zusammenfassungen von fünf Briefen, die von der Abtei an andere Prämonstratenserhäuser in Frankreich und Deutschland und an einen Grafen in Holland geschickt werden sollten. Es handelt sich also um das einzigartige Überleben eines administrativen ephemeren Materials, das die Mutterabtei als gröβerer mittelalterlicher Orden im Überfluss produziert haben muss. Die Autoren argumentieren, dass das Deckblatt von Tinselve, im Zusammenhang mit anderen in Prémontré produzierten Dokumenten gesehen, die traditionellen Narrativen der frühen Jahre des Prämonstratenserordens verkompliziert. Es wird nicht die Geschichte von der Harmonie zwischen den frühen Anhängern Norberts von Xanten, dem Ordensgründer, unterstützt, sondern das Deckblatt gibt uns stattdessen einen Blick auf die institutionellen Arbeitsweisen in Prémontré und in den angegliederten Gemeinschaften zu einem Zeitpunkt Mitte des 13. Jhdt., in dem die Äbte sich um die Behauptung ihres Primats über die anderen Häuser bemühten und um die Umsetzung von internen Reformen. | ||
