| Summary: | The issues of disability and rehabilitation can no longer be phrased solely in terms of rehabilitation processes. The time of regard for rehabilitation (and health care in general) as solving deficits has ended. What we need is a new understanding of healing. Over-reliance on the scientific model breeds fragmentation of the human being: one is treated for physical therapy here, psychology there, and myriad other specialties bring their separate talents to bear in treatment. It is no wonder that we cannot adequately identify our treatment outcomes with such fragmentation. The simple questions are the ones of meaning for the person: “Am I better? Do I feel more like a whole person?” The juxtaposition of two words can stimulate ideas and lead toward implications for action. The phrase “whole-person rehabilitation” conjures a means for bringing meaning and search for self-understanding back into the rehabilitation process. |
