Nevertheless, the cold, remote attitude often taken for granted in these institutions fosters a sense of isolation and alienation in the residents, undermining their spirit and leading to “institutional depression.” Care providers need to recognize this problem and meet it by bringing to the work a conscious sense of warmth and attentiveness to the residents. It is even possible -in fact, necessary -for care providers to love those under their care without losing their professionalism.
