Through the exegetical-theological approach combining diachronic and synchronic analysis of biblical texts, the paper proceeds in three stages: thesis - antithesis - synthesis. It begins with a systematic re-presentation of the Matthean vision of Jesus as the Messiah who embodies God's mercy, starting with a terminological survey and a rereading of Mt 20:29-34 as a key episode. Then, it exams the Matthean passages in which Jesus appears very severe in words and actions. These two investigations lead to a fi nal re-evaluation to establish a more documented and complete Christology of mercy in Mt which, as already seen in the case of Mk and Lk, remains quite signifi cant for today's Christian life.
