| Summary: | The article by Joanne Seldenratb is a case-study of the poetess Clara Feyoena van Raesfelt-van Sytzama (1729-1807), one of the few women whose work has been included in the 'Liedboek voor de kerken' [Hymnbook for the Churches] (1973), and earlier in the 'Evangelische gezangen' [Evangelical Hymns] (1806). Seldenrath investigates Clara's significance as a hymn-poetess. The three questions she poses are: how has Clara's work found its way into the 'Evangelische gezangen'; what was her context as a poetess; and how can her spirituality /image of God be characterized. Seldenrath gives a detailed description of Clara van Raesfelt's life story and work. Based on the development of theory on women's culture by Joanna Russ and Elaine Showalter, Seldenrath has shown Clara's context as hymn-poetess: first of all and in a surprisingly large degree, this context consists of other women who wrote edifying poems and of a pietistic/enlightened male fellowship climate in which there was room for these women. According to Seldenrath, Clara's spirituality and image of God hold for us striking elements, such as an enlightened piety and feminine images of God. Remaining within the margins of the theological beliefs of her surroundings, she exceeds these with her ideal of salvation for all people. It is precisely on this point that the compilers of the 'Evangelische gezangen' intervene in her poems: they reduce her ideal of salvation for all people to the members of the church. |
