Summary: | The relationship between the Merovingians and their bishops is a topic which has long merited a book-length study. In this examination of the episcopate in post-Roman Gaul, Gregory I. Halfond argues that bishops both conceptualized themselves as a corporate body and acted as such in an effort to effect political influence both locally and supraregionally. The map of ecclesiastical provinces, civitates, and metropolitan sees at the beginning of the book is immensely helpful not only in visually situating the various examples provided throughout, but also in illustrating the complexity of the Gallo-Frankish episcopate. |
