520 |a For the past two centuries, observers of Islam, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, have been vexed by the question of Islam’s stagnation and eventual decline relative to the West (western Europe and by extension the United States). Between the ninth and eleventh centuries, Muslims excelled in the areas of science, the arts, and statecraft, but by the seventeenth century those and other realms of human endeavor had come to be dominated by Europeans. As the late British-American scholar of Muslim societies, Bernard Lewis, put it, “What went wrong?” While Orientalists like Lewis and Muslim reformers like the Egyptian Muhammad Abduh (d. 1903) have tended to point to factors inherent to Islam, not least its alleged propensity to theocracy, Islamists and postcolonial theorists explain the authoritarianism, underdevelopment, and violence plaguing Muslim-majority countries as the consequence of Western imperialism in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
