| Riepilogo: | An ancient Order of Widows existed alongside the renowed Order of Virgins from the early day of Christianity until well into the Middle Ages. The 2015 Synod of Bishops proposed that the order of consecrated widows be restored. This article provides an overview of the Ordo Viduarum in ancient and medieval history, and presents the reality of consecrated widowhood in the contemporary Latin-rite Church. Since the mid-twentieth century, orders of widows have emerged in various dioceses in Europe and United States. There is no canon in the 1983 Codex Iuris Canonici in this regard, and only a very general provision is articulated in the 1990 Codex Canonum Ecclesiarium Orientalium (c. 570). The article offers an exegetical commentary of canon 570, as well as considerations concerning practical matters remanded to particular law. The appendix includes examples of particular law and liturgies developed for this juridic institute. |
