A civil union is simply non existent as a marriage in the juridic order. Nonetheless, it can be radically sanated if the couple elicited naturally sufficient matrimonial consent. This guidance has implications in the pastoral preparations of couples in a civil union for marriage coram Ecclesiam and for determining the grounds of nullity for a marriage whose partners had previously been together in a civil union
