Sugunasiri prior to his ordination, was born to Buddhist parents in Tangalla, Sri Lanka. He is an academically trained ordained Theravada monk who, after a multifaceted professional career and long-term religious activities in Canada, introduced Theravada-Buddhism to Cuba.
