| Σύνοψη: | On sait que les néoplatoniciens après Plotin ont élaboré un système très complexe d’autorités pour justifier leurs doctrines: Platon, Aristote et Pythagore, ainsi que les anciens théologiens (Orphée, Homère, les Oracles chaldaïques) reçoivent ainsi un statut proche du sacré. On a moins remarqué que l’usage de ces autorités, souvent envahissantes, n’excluait pas une certaine souplesse. D’une part, il reste possible de congédier une figure respectable si celle-ci viole les principes qui conviennent à une exégèse correcte ; d’autre part, lorsqu’une autorité est exploitée, surinterprétations, raffinements, évictions respectueuses, passages sous silence etc. permettent aux philosophes de conserver une forme d’autonomie et de développer leurs propres thèses sous couvert d’interpréter les Anciens. It is known that post-Plotinian Neoplatonists developed a highly complex system of authorities in order to give credence to their doctrines: Plato, Aristotle and Pythagoras, as well as ancient theologians (Orpheus, Homer and the Chaldean Oracles) are thus endowed with a status bordering on the sacred. However, the use of such - rather burdensome - authorities does not preclude a degree of adaptation: one can still dismiss respectable figures if they do not respect the principles ruling correct exegesis; on the other hand, when an authority is in fact used, overinterpretations, refinements, subtle dismissals or neglect etc. allow philosophers to remain autonomous and to develop their own theses under the cover of interpreting the Ancients. |
