D’une part, il reste possible de congédier une figure respectable si celle-ci viole les principes qui conviennent à une exégèse correcte ; d’autre part, lorsqu’une autorité est exploitée, surinterprétations, raffinements, évictions respectueuses, passages sous silence etc. permettent aux philosophes de conserver une forme d’autonomie et de développer leurs propres thèses sous couvert d’interpréter les Anciens. | ||

However, the use of such - rather burdensome - authorities does not preclude a degree of adaptation: one can still dismiss respectable figures if they do not respect the principles ruling correct exegesis; on the other hand, when an authority is in fact used, overinterpretations, refinements, subtle dismissals or neglect etc. allow philosophers to remain autonomous and to develop their own theses under the cover of interpreting the Ancients. | ||
