Summary: | This article presents learning from an appreciative inquiry carried out by the trustees of Quaker Social Action (QSA) into the current meaning and expression of spirituality in the organization, a UK charity addressing poverty in the East End of London. The full report on which the article draws provides detailed insight into how the Quaker dimension in the organization is expressed through its governance, work and relationships. This article considers how the inquiry facilitated deeper understanding of the meaning and application of characteristic Quaker values, ways and practices in the organization. It identifies pivotal points in an understanding that developed of a process by which foundational Quaker principles infuse the organization; they embedded in governance and decision-making by trustees; translate into a shared understanding of principles affirmed by trustees and staff; and displayed in the daily working practices of staff and quality of relationship between staff, service users and stakeholders. This continuity is based on an organizational culture shaped by Quaker values, ways and practices that the inquiry identified and explored in detail — this was named as the Q-bit. |
