In this volume, James Arcadi offers a proposal for understanding Christ’s presence in the eucharist which draws both on the history of interpretation and also on contemporary conceptual resources. This includes an exploration of speech-act theory and the nature of God’s presence in holy places and divine omniscience, as well as recent work on Christology and philosophy of mind. These various threads lead Arcadi to an incarnational model of the eucharist which he calls ‘Sacramental Impanation’.This is a carefully constructed book beginning with how we discern the body of Christ and the biblical and theological foundations for the eucharist. Arcadi helpfully sets out his conceptual preliminaries—in terms of hermeneutics and philosophy—and then surveys the spectrum of how Christ’s presence is understood. This concludes with reflection on the narrative in Luke 24: ‘with Emmaus as a paradigmatic explication of the work of the Eucharist, one ought to see that the real change that takes place at the Eucharist is both a metaphysical one in the elements and an epistemological one in the minds of the participants’ (p. 56). This leads Arcadi into setting out his understanding of Paul in 1 Corinthians—the nature of participation as developed in this book.
