| Summary: | Since the millennium, early modern preaching has gone from being a ‘Cinderella subject’—neglected, unimportant, unwanted—to one of the liveliest and most significant areas of intellectual enquiry in the field. Accordingly, it is no surprise that Paul’s Cross—the pre-eminent pulpit in early modern England—and the sermons preached there have become a topic of particular focus. In many respects, the present volume is a companion piece to an essay collection published in 2013 by Brill and edited by Torrance Kirby and Paul Stanwood, entitled Paul’s Cross and the Culture of Persuasion in England, 1520-1640, as both books stem from an international conference held at McGill University in August 2012 on the same theme as the eponymous Brill collection. All of the editors of the sermons in the present volume contributed essays to the Brill collection, in some cases on the same subjects: Kirby takes Richard Smyth’s ‘Retraction’ sermon of 1547 as one of his foci in both books; Mark Rankin writes on James Brooks’s 1553 ‘Reconciliation Sermon’ in both; and Paul Stanwood explores sermons by John Copcot, John Whitgift, and Mark Frank in both contexts. |
