Luther is known ‘not so much’ for a doctrine of growth in holiness. In his introduction, Anderas challenges this prevailing image of Luther as a ‘theologian sans holiness’ (p. 18). The issue was joined as early as 1525, by Erasmus, who questioned Luther in their debate: ‘If the whole man, even when born again through faith, is nothing but “flesh,” where is the “spirit” that is born of the Spirit? Where is the child of God? Where is the new creature?’ The ‘real Luther’—as the image grew up—was the one who proclaimed, ‘Be a sinner and sin boldly but believe and rejoice in Christ more boldly still!’ For, ‘once justified, the righteous sinner has nowhere to go, for there is nowhere he needs to go’ (p. 17). | ||
