As she herself writes, she aims to give a new image of the bishop of Caesarea, by highlighting the importance of demons in his theology, and showing that he was not as ‘triumphalist’ or ‘optimistic’ as he has sometimes been thought. As is suggested by its title, the book implies a reflection on the connection between demons and political thought in Eusebius, but it is also a contribution to the history of Christian demonology and early Christian reflections on ‘agency’ and ‘responsibility’, terms which the author favours over the term ‘free will’, which she considers an anachronism. |
