520 |a Irenaeus of Lyons has often been presented as a theologian of creation, and so he is, but he is nonetheless a theologian of Scripture, the first exegete and practitioner of hermeneutics in a way, and his originality comes from the fact that he takes into account the unity of Scripture, its symphony, in contrast to the Gnostics, which leads him to articulate both creation and new creation in his theology. This is the original contribution of Stephen O. Presley, who renews the reading of the Adversus Haereses, starting from the intertextual reading that Irenaeus made of Genesis 1-3.Presley has two predecessors in the field: Matthew Steenberg (Irenaeus on Creation: The Cosmic Christ and the Saga of Redemption [Brill, 2008]), who is more interested in the theological than in the scriptural dimension of Irenaeus’s work, and Thomas Holsinger-Friesen (Irenaeus and Genesis: A Study of Competition in Early Christian Hermeneutics [Journal of Theological Interpretation, Supplements, 2009]), which does not take into account the intertextual readings of Genesis 1-3, which makes it difficult to account for Irenaeus’s opposition to the Gnostics, for example.
