| Summary: | There are many good reasons for exploring alleged connections between Cynic philosophy and early Christianity; so it is here averred. They shared a concern for agreement of word and deed in a programme of ascetic poverty, itself indicating a refusal of many social norms, and this as a universal message bypassing race, gender, and social class. Possible links have long been discussed, but in the final two decades of the last century (the focus here), a very close connection, even a ‘Cynic Jesus’, was influentially argued in some detail by a raft of authors in the USA, including Robert W. Funk and J. D. Crossan (and, in the UK, but with less effect, by the present reviewer). The evidence and its interpretation warrant careful attention, but even more so when any portrayal of Jesus and his first followers as social radicals dismays some contemporaries while enthusing others. |
