The large number of variants attested by these manuscripts, in particular by 1QIsaa, has given rise to many and often diverging suggestions for explaining and evaluating the variant readings. The volume under review is most interesting as it, first of all, presents ‘on a verse-by-verse basis, the variants of the Hebrew witnesses of Isaiah’ (p. 1), and secondly, puts forward ‘judgements and characterizations regarding why specific variants exist’ (ibid.). The result of the whole endeavour is an impressive piece of work containing a wealth of information. Or to characterize the work as Eugene Ulrich has done in the foreword, the volume is ‘a highly useful compendium of the Hebrew textual variants of the book of Isaiah’ (p. vii). | ||
